II What is Worship?
Worship is an act of humble adoration ~ Psalm 95:6, 100:4
Worship is a consuming desire to give to God ~ Acts 2:43-47
Worship is a fragrance that rises to heaven and fills the nostrils of the Lord with a sweet aroma. Exodus 30:34-36, Psalm 141:2, Revelation 5:8, 8:3-4
Worship is costly and self humiliating ~ John 12:1-3, 1 Corinthians 11:15
III Definition of Worship
Worship is the Christian’s full-time occupation. Nothing should be allowed to interfere or diminish this scared duty of the believer. (A.W. Tozer)
Worship is our innermost being responding with praise for all that God is, through our attitudes, actions, thoughts, and words, based on the truth of God as He has revealed Himself. Another way to say it is worship is glorifying God. To be wholly obsessed with the glory of God is the consuming passion of the true worshiper, who lives to exalt God. (John MacArthur)
IV Worship is Glorifying God
Exodus 33:18-23, 34:6-8
V Why Give God Glory?
1. Because He made us
Psalm 100:1-3 Psalm 139:13-16
2. God made everything to give Him glory
Ps 102:18, Is 43:21
The purpose for which we were created in the first place is to give God glory. . . The supreme fulfillment of God’s design for us, then, is to be totally absorbed in the praise of His glory, to find our ultimate pleasure in Him and to view all of life through eyes that are filled with wonder and adoration for the One who created everything . . . that is the worldview of the true worshiper. (John MacArthur)
VI How Do We Glorify God?
Acts of Pure and Acceptable Worship
1. The Sacrificial Giving of Yourself to God
Romans 12:1, 6:13
2. Unwavering faith in God
Romans 4:18-21
3. Verbal praise
1 Corinthians 1:26-31, Psalm 146:1-2
4. Abundance of fruit
John 15:1-2, 5, 8, Colossians 1:10
5. Willingness to Suffer
1 Peter 4:16, 1 Peter 1:6
This faith and its working in our lives, is to the glory of the Lord Jesus. It is the approval of our faith which is to resound to the praise of the Lord Jesus. (Kenneth Wuest ~ Word Studies in the Greek New Testament ~ Vol II)
6. A contented Heart
The true worshipper . . . lives a life of contentment regardless of circumstances. Contentment testifies to the wisdom and sovereignty of God and thereby glorifies Him. *
7. Loving Others
Matthew 22:37-40, Romans 13:8-10, 1 John 4:20
Worship is deliberate, purposeful, and active. It involves not just the thought process, and not merely the emotions, but the whole being as well. The life of a true worshipper is a joyous, vibrant life. A life of actively seeking to glorify God in practical ways. (John MacArthur)
